Knighton's camera obscura is to be found in an observatory which is dedicated to planetary astronomy with astronomical and meteoritic exhibits. There is also a planetarium.

The lens is a 13" oil-spaced doublet with a focal ratio of F15. The curved screen is 48" in diameter. It was installed at an elevation of 417 metres in 1994. The lens blanks were spares for the telescope lens being built but fortunately were not needed.

To focus the image the whole floor of the camera obscura chamber, including the screen and viewing public, is raised or lowered by means of a hydraulic ram. The motorised optics unit turns through 360° and the mirror through 90° (vertically).
