The Kirriemuir camera obscura was built in 1929 and was donated, with the cricket pavilion in which it is to be found, to the town of Kirriemuir by J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan. A short sequence of film still exists showing him at the opening ceremony. The Barrie Pavilion is situated at a height of 655 feet above sea-level.

The lens (an achromatic combination) is 7" in diameter and has a focal length of 8' 9" and therefore a focal ratio of F15. The table screen is 4' 6" in diameter and is of a concave shape. The octagonal room has an internal diameter of about 12 feet.

Focusing is accomplished by a jack on the table pedestal or by tilting the table itself.
