Camera Obscuras in Australia and New Zealand

AUSTRALIA

Adelaide, South Australia c1931- 1970s At "Windy Point" ("Observation Point").Called "Panorama Scope".
Australia 1990s Built by government. 3-element optics with fl of 27ft. Never erected - in store. Cost $150, 000.
Bondi Beach, New South Wales 1889/1893 In the grounds of Aquarium. Actually on the adjoining Tamarama Beach.
Dromana, Victoria till 1988 At Arthur's Seat, on the Mornington Peninsula. In the "Garden of the Moon" Restaurant. By P.Hosking
Manly, New South Wales 1857 Still there in 1888. Built by H.G.Gilbert. Adjacent to "Dalley's Castle". Camera Street still exists.
Manly, New South Wales 1888-c1906 "Cole's Royal Camera Obscura". Used a double meniscus lens. In three storey building, tea room below.
Sydney, New South Wales 1836 In Hyde Park at the top of Bathurst Street. Probably displaced by the Sydney Town Hall.
Toowoomba c1966 - 1998 By W.M.Lowe. At "Picnic Point". 6" doublet, f13. The whole building rotated to pan. Now completely gone.

NEW ZEALAND

Napier, North Island mid 1970s In an aquarium. 3 separate optical heads. Lenses 8" f33. Concrete floor is the screen. Optics rotate once every 25 minutes.
New Zealand 1997 Possibly to be erected at New Brighton, Christchurch. By Mal Kernot ( of Wairakei ) and Brian Romeril.
Palmeston North,
North Island
1996 Uses simple, old, meniscus lens. Moved from Palmeston North Museum to the Science Museum.
